Different States of Water: Solid, Liquid, and Gas
Water exists in three different states:
- Solid (Ice): When water is cooled below 0°C, it freezes and turns into ice. Ice has a definite shape and volume.
- Liquid (Water): At normal room temperature, water exists in its liquid form. It takes the shape of the container it is poured into but has a fixed volume.
- Gas (Water Vapor): When water is heated above 100°C, it boils and changes into water vapor. Water vapor is an invisible gas that spreads in the air.
Water Cycle and Its Importance
The water cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It consists of the following stages:
- Evaporation: The sun heats up water from oceans, rivers, lakes, and other water bodies, turning it into water vapor.
- Condensation: Water vapor rises into the air, cools down, and changes into tiny water droplets, forming clouds.
- Precipitation: When water droplets in clouds combine and become heavy, they fall back to Earth as rain, snow, or hail.
- Collection: The water from precipitation is collected in rivers, lakes, oceans, and underground reservoirs, restarting the cycle.
Importance of the Water Cycle:
- Maintains the balance of water on Earth.
- Provides fresh water for drinking, irrigation, and industries.
- Helps regulate Earth’s temperature and climate.
Evaporation and Condensation
- Evaporation: It is the process where liquid water changes into water vapor due to heat from the sun. The rate of evaporation increases with:
- Higher temperatures
- Windy conditions
- Large surface area
- Low humidity
- Condensation: It is the process where water vapor cools down and turns back into liquid water. This process is responsible for cloud formation, dew, and fog.
Importance of Water Conservation
Water is essential for all living beings. Due to increasing population and pollution, water conservation has become necessary. Some ways to conserve water include:
- Reducing Waste: Avoiding unnecessary water usage while bathing, washing, and cleaning.
- Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting and storing rainwater for future use.
- Recycling Water: Reusing wastewater for gardening and other non-drinking purposes.
- Planting Trees: Trees help retain moisture in the soil and reduce surface runoff.
