Chapter 1: The Ever-Evolving World of Science

Main Idea: Science is a way of asking questions and finding answers about the world.

Important Points:

  • Science starts with curiosity and observation
  • Steps of scientific method: Observe → Ask question → Make guess (hypothesis) → Experiment → Conclusion
  • Science keeps changing with new discoveries
  • Indian scientists have made big contributions in ancient and modern times
  • Science is connected to our daily life

Best Tip: Always ask “Why does this happen?” and “How does it work?”

Chapter 2: Exploring Substances: Acidic, Basic, and Neutral

Main Idea: We can group substances as acid, base or neutral using indicators.

Key Points:

  • Acids taste sour (lemon, vinegar)
  • Bases taste bitter and feel soapy (soap, baking soda)
  • Indicators change colour: Litmus, turmeric, red cabbage
  • Blue litmus → red in acid
  • Red litmus → blue in base
  • Turmeric stays yellow in acid/neutral, becomes red in base
  • Acid + Base = neutralisation (makes salt + water)
  • Example: Antacid tablet reduces acidity in stomach

Chapter 3: Electricity: Circuits and their Components

Main Idea: Electricity flows only in a complete (closed) path called circuit.

Key Points:

  • Basic circuit needs: cell/battery, wires, bulb, switch
  • Closed circuit → bulb glows
  • Open circuit → bulb does not glow
  • Conductors allow current (copper, aluminium)
  • Insulators do not allow current (plastic, rubber)
  • Learn circuit symbols for diagrams

Safety: Never touch electric wires or switches with wet hands.

Chapter 4: The World of Metals and Non-metals

Main Idea: Metals and non-metals behave differently.

Key Points – Metals:

  • Shiny, strong, can be hammered into sheets (malleable)
  • Can be drawn into wires (ductile)
  • Good conductors of heat and electricity
  • Make sound when hit (sonorous)

Non-metals:

  • Mostly dull, brittle, poor conductors
  • Examples: Carbon, sulphur, oxygen

Common uses: Iron in machines, copper in wires, gold in jewellery

Chapter 5: Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical

Main Idea: Some changes can be reversed, some cannot.

Key Points:

  • Physical change → No new substance made (folding paper, melting ice)
  • Chemical change → New substance formed (burning paper, rusting iron)
  • Reversible changes → mostly physical
  • Irreversible changes → mostly chemical

Quick Table (for revision):

Change typeExampleCan be reversed?
PhysicalMelting of waxYes
ChemicalBurning of matchstickNo

Chapter 6: Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change

Main Idea: The growing-up stage between childhood and adulthood.

Key Points:

  • Physical changes: height increase, voice change, body hair growth
  • Emotional changes also happen
  • Importance of balanced diet, exercise, hygiene
  • Dealing with peer pressure and stress

Message: Growing up is normal. Take care of body and mind.

Chapter 7: Heat Transfer in Nature

Main Idea: Heat moves in three ways.

Key Points:

  • Conduction → Heat transfer in solids (spoon in hot tea becomes hot)
  • Convection → Heat transfer in liquids and gases (hot air rises)
  • Radiation → Heat travels without medium (sun heat reaches earth)
  • Land breeze and sea breeze happen because of convection
  • Handles of utensils are made of wood or plastic to stop conduction

Chapter 8: Measurement of Time and Motion

Main Idea: We measure how fast or slow things move and how time passes.

Key Points:

  • Uniform motion → same distance in equal time
  • Non-uniform motion → different distance in equal time
  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • Different units: seconds, minutes, hours, kilometres per hour
  • Distance-time graph helps understand motion

Chapter 9: Life Processes in Animals

Main Idea: Basic activities that keep animals alive.

Key Points:

  • Nutrition – getting food
  • Respiration – using oxygen to get energy
  • Transportation – moving food, oxygen, waste
  • Excretion – removing waste
  • Different animals have different ways (e.g., fish use gills)

Chapter 10: Life Processes in Plants

Main Idea: Plants make their own food.

Key Points:

  • Photosynthesis: Plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen
  • Equation: Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen (needs sunlight + chlorophyll)
  • Transpiration: Loss of water vapour from leaves
  • Plants also respire and transport water & food

Chapter 11: Light: Shadows and Reflections

Main Idea: Light travels in straight lines.

Key Points:

  • Shadow forms when light is blocked
  • Reflection: Light bounces back (mirror)
  • Laws of reflection: Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
  • Plane mirror forms virtual, erect and same size image

Activity idea: Make a simple periscope using two mirrors.

Chapter 12: Earth, Moon, and the Sun

Main Idea: How Earth, Moon and Sun move and affect us.

Key Points:

  • Earth rotates → causes day and night
  • Earth revolves around Sun → causes seasons and year
  • Moon revolves around Earth → causes phases of moon
  • Solar eclipse: Moon comes between Sun and Earth
  • Lunar eclipse: Earth comes between Sun and Moon

Fun fact: We always see the same side of the Moon.
