Chapter 1 : Nutrition in Plants

1. What is Motion?

When an object changes its position over time, it is said to be in motion.

Examples:

  • A moving car
  • A flying bird
  • Flowing water

2. Types of Motion

  1. Uniform Motion
    • When an object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, it is said to have uniform motion.
    • Example: The Earth’s revolution around the Sun.
  2. Non-Uniform Motion
    • When an object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time, it is said to have non-uniform motion.
    • Example: A car moving in traffic.
  3. Rectilinear Motion
    • When an object moves in a straight line, it is called rectilinear motion.
    • Example: A train moving on a track.
  4. Circular Motion
    • When an object moves in a circular path around a fixed point, it is called circular motion.
    • Example: The motion of a fan blade.
  5. Periodic Motion
    • When an object repeats its motion at regular intervals, it is called periodic motion.
    • Example: The swinging of a pendulum.

3. What is Time?

Time is a physical quantity that helps us measure the duration of events.

Devices to Measure Time

The total length covered by an object is called distance.

  • Unit of Distance: Meter (m)

(ii) Unit of Time

  • The SI unit of time is Second (s).
  • Other units: Minute, Hour, Day, etc.

(iii) What is Speed?

Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance.

Formula for Speed: Speed=DistanceTime\text{Speed} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

Example:
If a car covers 100 meters in 10 seconds, its speed will be: 10010=10 m/s\frac{100}{10} = 10 \text{ m/s}

Units of Speed:

  • Meter per second (m/s)
  • Kilometer per hour (km/h)

(iv) What is Average Speed?

If an object moves at different speeds at different times, its average speed is given by: Average Speed=Total DistanceTotal Time\text{Average Speed} = \frac{\text{Total Distance}}{\text{Total Time}}

5. Time-Speed Graph

A graph can be used to show the relationship between time and speed.

  1. Straight Line Graph:
    • If an object moves at a uniform speed, the time-speed graph will be a straight line.
  2. Curved Graph:
    • If an object moves at a non-uniform speed, the graph will be irregular.

Uses of Graphs:

  • To analyze motion
  • To calculate the average speed of an object

6. Devices to Measure Vehicle Speed

8. Key Points to Remember

  • Motion is measured using distance and time.
  • In uniform motion, an object covers equal distances in equal time intervals.

(Motion and Time)

(Types of Motion)

(Uniform Motion)
(Non-Uniform Motion)
(Rectilinear Motion)
(Circular Motion)
(Periodic Motion)

(Instruments to Measure Time):

(Clock)
(Stopwatch)
(Sundial)

(Average Speed)

(Time-Speed Graph)
