Class 7 Science – Chapter 11: Light

Introduction

Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects. It travels in a straight line and allows us to perceive the world around us. This chapter explains the behavior of light, its reflection, and its interaction with different objects.

Light and Its Importance

Light is essential for vision. We can see an object only when light from that object enters our eyes. This light can either be emitted by the object itself (like the Sun) or be reflected from it (like the Moon).

Sources of Light

Objects that emit their own light are called luminous objects.

  • Examples: Sun, stars, candle, electric bulb
Objects that do not emit their own light but reflect light are called non-luminous objects.
  • Examples: Moon, books, trees, tables

Reflection of Light

When light falls on a surface and bounces back, this phenomenon is called reflection. Reflection allows us to see objects.

Laws of Reflection

  1. The angle of incidence (∠i) is always equal to the angle of reflection (∠r).
  2. The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal to the surface all lie in the same plane.

Types of Reflection

  1. Regular Reflection: When light falls on a smooth and polished surface, it gets reflected in a specific direction, forming a clear image.
    • Example: Reflection from a plane mirror.
  2. Diffuse Reflection: When light falls on a rough surface, it scatters in different directions, and no clear image is formed.
    • Example: Reflection from a wall or a piece of paper.

3. Mirrors and Images

Mirrors are smooth surfaces that reflect light according to the laws of reflection.

Types of Mirrors

  1. Plane Mirror: A flat mirror that forms an upright, virtual, and same-sized image as the object.
  2. Spherical Mirrors:
    • Concave Mirror: Curved inward; forms real or virtual images.
    • Convex Mirror: Curved outward; forms virtual and smaller images.

Characteristics of Images Formed by a Plane Mirror

  • The image is virtual (cannot be obtained on a screen).
  • The image is erect (upright).
  • The image is of the same size as the object.
  • The image is laterally inverted (left appears right and right appears left).
  • The distance of the image from the mirror is equal to the distance of the object from the mirror.

Lateral Inversion

Lateral inversion is the phenomenon where the left side of an object appears as the right side in the mirror and vice versa.

  • Example: The word “AMBULANCE” is written in reverse on an ambulance so that drivers can read it correctly in their rearview mirrors.

Spherical Mirrors and Their Uses

  • Concave Mirror: Used in torches, headlamps, and shaving mirrors as they focus light and form magnified images.
  • Convex Mirror: Used in vehicle rearview mirrors and security mirrors as they provide a wider field of view.

Refraction of Light

Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another due to a change in speed.

  • Example: A pencil appearing bent when dipped in water.
  • Uses: Lenses in glasses, microscopes, telescopes.

Dispersion of Light

When white light passes through a glass prism, it splits into seven colors (VIBGYOR – Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red). This phenomenon is called dispersion.

  • Example: Formation of a rainbow.

Sunlight – White or Colored?

Sunlight is composed of seven colors, which combine to form white light. This is evident from the dispersion of light in a prism or a rainbow formation in nature.

Human Eye – Structure and Function

The human eye is a natural optical instrument that helps us see the world.

Parts of the Eye:

  • Cornea: The transparent front part that allows light to enter.
  • Iris: Controls the amount of light entering the eye.
  • Pupil: The black opening in the center of the iris that regulates light entry.
  • Lens: Focuses light on the retina to form an image.
  • Retina: The light-sensitive layer where images are formed.
  • Optic Nerve: Sends visual information to the brain.

Care of Eyes

  • Read in proper light to avoid strain.
  • Avoid watching TV or screens from too close.
  • Eat foods rich in Vitamin A (carrots, spinach, papaya).
  • Wash eyes regularly with clean water.

Braille System

A writing and reading system for visually impaired individuals, developed by Louis Braille. It consists of raised dots that can be felt by touch.

Important Terms to Remember

  • Luminous Objects: Objects that emit their own light.
  • Non-luminous Objects: Objects that reflect light.
  • Reflection: Bouncing back of light.
  • Lateral Inversion: Left-right reversal in a plane mirror.
  • Refraction: Bending of light when passing between different mediums.
  • Dispersion: Splitting of light into its seven colors.
  • Concave Mirror: Curved inward, used for magnified images.
  • Convex Mirror: Curved outward, used for wide-angle views.

Conclusion

This chapter explains how light enables vision and interacts with various objects. Understanding reflection, refraction, and the functioning of the human eye helps us appreciate the role of light in daily life.

(Sources of Light)

(Reflection of Light)

(Laws of Reflection)

(Types of Reflection)

(Mirrors and Images)

(Types of Mirrors)

(Spherical Mirror):

(Lateral Inversion)

(Uses of Spherical Mirrors)

(Refraction of Light)

(Dispersion of Light)
