English Grammar में Clause (क्लॉज़) एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण topic है। Sentence Formation, Noun Clause, Adjective Clause, Adverb Clause, Sentence Transformation, Error Detection, Conjunctions और competitive examinations के grammar questions को समझने के लिए Clauses का concept स्पष्ट होना जरूरी है।
सरल शब्दों में:
Clause = Words का ऐसा group जिसमें Subject और Verb का grammatical relationship होता है।
लेकिन केवल Subject और Verb होना पर्याप्त नहीं है। यह भी देखना जरूरी है कि clause अपने आप complete meaning देता है या नहीं।
1. Clause क्या है?
Clause शब्दों का ऐसा समूह है जिसमें सामान्यतः Subject + Verb का grammatical relationship होता है।
उदाहरण:
She sings.
- Subject = She
- Verb = sings
- Complete meaning = Yes
- इसलिए यह Independent Clause है।
दूसरा उदाहरण:
because she sings well
- Subject = she
- Verb = sings
- लेकिन meaning अपने आप complete नहीं है।
- इसलिए यह Dependent Clause है।
एक sentence में एक या एक से अधिक clauses हो सकते हैं।
उदाहरण:
When the teacher arrived, the students became silent.
इस sentence में दो clauses हैं:
- When the teacher arrived → Dependent Clause
- the students became silent → Independent Clause
याद रखें:
हर clause में Subject और Verb का grammatical relationship होता है, लेकिन हर clause अपने आप complete sentence नहीं होता।
2. Phrase और Clause में अंतर
Clause और Phrase में अंतर समझना बहुत जरूरी है क्योंकि दोनों ही words के groups होते हैं।
Phrase शब्दों का ऐसा group है जिसमें सामान्यतः Subject + Finite Verb का complete grammatical relationship नहीं होता।
Examples of phrases:
- in the room
- after the school
- very beautiful
- to win the match
- a man of courage
Clause में Subject और Verb का grammatical relationship होता है।
Examples:
- when he came
- because she was ill
- who lives here
- I know him
| Phrase | Clause |
|---|---|
| सामान्यतः Subject + Finite Verb relationship नहीं | Subject + Verb relationship होता है |
| अकेले complete sentence नहीं बनाता | Independent clause complete sentence बन सकता है |
| in the room | when he came |
| after the rain | after the rain stopped |
| a beautiful girl | who is beautiful |
एक आसान पहचान:
After the rain → Phrase
After the rain stopped → Clause
दूसरे example में:
- Subject = the rain
- Verb = stopped
इसलिए यह Clause है।
3. Clause के मुख्य प्रकार
Clauses को सबसे पहले दो बड़े groups में बाँटा जाता है:
1. Independent Clause
जिसे Main Clause या Principal Clause भी कहा जाता है।
2. Dependent Clause
जिसे Subordinate Clause भी कहा जाता है।
Dependent Clause के तीन प्रमुख प्रकार हैं:
- Noun Clause
- Adjective Clause / Relative Clause
- Adverb Clause / Adverbial Clause
Structure:
Clause
→ Independent / Main Clause
→ Dependent / Subordinate Clause
→ Noun Clause
→ Adjective Clause
→ Adverb Clause
4. Independent Clause / Main Clause
Independent Clause वह clause है जो अपने आप complete thought व्यक्त करता है और अकेले sentence के रूप में इस्तेमाल हो सकता है।
Examples:
- Ravi works hard.
- She is reading a book.
- The sun rises in the east.
- Rohan works hard.
- They won the match.
Example:
I went to school.
- Subject = I
- Verb = went
- Complete thought = Yes
- इसलिए = Independent Clause
Independent Clause को:
- Main Clause
- Principal Clause
भी कहा जाता है।
5. Dependent Clause / Subordinate Clause
Dependent Clause में Subject और Verb होते हैं, लेकिन यह अकेले complete meaning नहीं देता। इसे meaning पूरा करने के लिए Main Clause की आवश्यकता होती है।
Examples:
- because I was ill
- when he arrived
- if you work hard
- although she was tired
- who lives next door
- what he said
Because I was ill
इसे अकेले पढ़ने पर naturally प्रश्न उठता है कि इसका परिणाम क्या हुआ?
Complete sentence:
I did not go to school because I was ill.
यहाँ:
- I did not go to school → Independent Clause
- because I was ill → Dependent Clause
Dependent Clause को Subordinate Clause भी कहा जाता है।
6. Main Clause और Subordinate Clause
एक sentence में Main Clause और Subordinate Clause दोनों हो सकते हैं।
When the bell rang, the students left the classroom.
- When the bell rang → Subordinate Clause
- the students left the classroom → Main Clause
I will call you when I reach home.
- I will call you → Main Clause
- when I reach home → Subordinate Clause
Subordinate Clause sentence के beginning या end दोनों स्थानों पर आ सकता है।
7. Coordinate Clause
जब दो या अधिक Independent Clauses को coordinating conjunction से जोड़ा जाता है, तो उन्हें coordinate clauses कहा जा सकता है।
Common coordinating conjunctions को FANBOYS से याद किया जाता है:
- F = for
- A = and
- N = nor
- B = but
- O = or
- Y = yet
- S = so
Examples:
I studied hard, and I passed the exam.
- I studied hard → Independent Clause
- I passed the exam → Independent Clause
He was tired, but he continued working.
- He was tired → Independent Clause
- he continued working → Independent Clause
Hurry up, or you will miss the bus.
दोनों parts independent clauses हैं।
जब दो independent clauses coordinating conjunction से जुड़ते हैं, तो सामान्यतः Compound Sentence बनता है।
8. Noun Clause
Noun Clause वह Dependent Clause है जो sentence में Noun की तरह काम करता है।
Noun Clause निम्न roles निभा सकता है:
- Subject
- Object
- Subject Complement
- Object of Preposition
Examples:
What he said is true.
यहाँ What he said पूरे sentence में Subject की तरह काम कर रहा है।
I know what he wants.
यहाँ what he wants verb “know” का object है।
The truth is that he is innocent.
यहाँ that he is innocent complement की भूमिका निभा रहा है।
9. Noun Clause के Functions
Subject के रूप में
What she wants is unclear.
Where he lives is unknown.
Why he left remains a mystery.
That he is honest is well known.
इनमें पूरा clause Subject की तरह काम करता है।
Object के रूप में
I know that he is honest.
She told me what happened.
We don’t know where he lives.
He asked why she was angry.
Tell me who won the match.
इनमें पूरा clause verb का object है।
Complement के रूप में
The truth is that he is innocent.
My question is why he left.
The problem is that we have no time.
Preposition के बाद
We talked about what he had done.
यहाँ what he had done preposition about के बाद आया है और noun-like function करता है।
10. Noun Clause के प्रमुख Introductory Words
Noun Clause निम्न words से शुरू हो सकता है:
- that
- what
- who
- whom
- whoever
- whatever
- whether
- if
- why
- where
- when
- how
लेकिन केवल introductory word देखकर Noun Clause identify नहीं करना चाहिए।
Clause sentence में क्या function कर रहा है, यह देखना सबसे जरूरी है।
11. Noun Clause की पहचान
Noun Clause पहचानने का सबसे useful तरीका है clause से What? / Who? पूछना।
I know what he wants.
प्रश्न:
I know what?
उत्तर:
what he wants
इसलिए यह Noun Clause है।
एक और test:
यदि पूरे clause को it / something / somebody से replace करने पर sentence का basic structure सही रहता है, तो वह Noun Clause हो सकता है।
I know what he wants.
→ I know it.
इससे पता चलता है कि पूरा clause noun-like function कर रहा है।
12. Direct Question और Noun Clause
Direct Question और Noun Clause में अंतर competitive exams में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है।
Direct Question:
Where does he live?
यह एक direct question है।
Noun Clause:
I know where he lives.
यहाँ where he lives Noun Clause है।
ध्यान दें:
Direct Question:
Where does he live?
Noun Clause:
where he lives
Noun Clause में indirect question के रूप में सामान्यतः Subject + Verb order आता है।
❌ I know where does he live.
✅ I know where he lives.
इसी प्रकार:
❌ Tell me what does he want.
✅ Tell me what he wants.
13. Adjective Clause / Relative Clause
Adjective Clause वह Dependent Clause है जो किसी Noun या Pronoun को describe या modify करता है।
इसे Relative Clause भी कहा जाता है।
Example:
The boy who is wearing a blue shirt is my brother.
यहाँ:
- Noun = boy
- Clause = who is wearing a blue shirt
- Clause boy के बारे में information दे रहा है।
इसलिए यह Adjective Clause है।
Adjective Clause पहचानने के लिए पूछें:
- Which one?
- What kind?
- Whose?
यदि clause किसी noun/pronoun की पहचान या विशेषता बता रहा है, तो वह Adjective Clause है।
14. Relative Pronouns
Adjective Clauses में commonly used relative pronouns:
| Relative Pronoun | सामान्य उपयोग |
|---|---|
| who | व्यक्ति, subject |
| whom | व्यक्ति, object |
| whose | possession |
| which | चीज/जानवर |
| that | व्यक्ति या चीज, restrictive use में common |
Examples:
Who
The girl who won the race is my sister.
Whom
The man whom I met was a doctor.
Whose
The boy whose father is a teacher is my friend.
Which
The book which I bought is expensive.
That
The car that I bought is new.
15. Relative Adverbs
Adjective Clauses में कुछ relative adverbs भी महत्वपूर्ण हैं:
- where
- when
- why
Where
This is the place where I was born.
When
I remember the day when we first met.
Why
I know the reason why he left.
यहाँ प्रत्येक clause अपने से पहले वाले noun को modify कर रहा है।
16. Restrictive और Non-Restrictive Adjective Clauses
Adjective Clauses मुख्यतः दो प्रकार से समझे जा सकते हैं:
Defining / Restrictive Clause
यह noun की पहचान के लिए आवश्यक information देता है।
The students who worked hard passed the exam.
यहाँ clause यह बताने में मदद कर रहा है कि कौन-से students पास हुए।
Non-Defining / Non-Restrictive Clause
यह noun के बारे में additional information देता है।
Rohan, who is my best friend, lives in Delhi.
यहाँ:
who is my best friend
अतिरिक्त information है।
इसलिए commas का प्रयोग किया गया है।
17. Relative Pronoun का Omission
कुछ situations में relative pronoun को हटाया जा सकता है, विशेषकर जब वह clause का object हो।
The book that I bought is expensive.
→ The book I bought is expensive.
यहाँ that object है:
I bought the book.
इसलिए that हटाया जा सकता है।
लेकिन:
The boy who won the race is my friend.
यहाँ who subject है।
इसलिए:
❌ The boy won the race is my friend.
इस तरह relative pronoun को हटाना गलत होगा।
मुख्य rule:
Object relative pronoun कई contexts में omit हो सकता है, लेकिन subject relative pronoun को इस प्रकार omit नहीं किया जा सकता।
18. Adverb Clause
Adverb Clause वह Dependent Clause है जो sentence में adverb की तरह काम करता है और मुख्य action के बारे में अतिरिक्त information देता है।
यह information हो सकती है:
- Time
- Place
- Reason
- Condition
- Purpose
- Result
- Contrast
- Comparison
- Manner
Example:
I stayed home because it was raining.
यहाँ:
because it was raining
बताता है कि मैं घर पर क्यों रुका।
इसलिए यह Adverb Clause of Reason है।
19. Adverb Clause के प्रमुख प्रकार
| प्रकार | मुख्य प्रश्न | Common Words |
|---|---|---|
| Time | When? | when, while, before, after, until |
| Place | Where? | where, wherever |
| Reason | Why? | because, since, as |
| Condition | Under what condition? | if, unless |
| Purpose | For what purpose? | so that, in order that |
| Result | With what result? | so…that, such…that |
| Contrast | Despite what? | although, though, even though |
| Comparison | Compared how? | than, as…as, as if |
20. Time Clause
Time Clause बताता है कि कोई action कब हुआ या होगा।
Common words:
- when
- whenever
- while
- before
- after
- until
- till
- since
- as soon as
- as long as
- once
Examples:
When I reached home, it started raining.
Call me when you arrive.
I will wait until you return.
After he finished his work, he went home.
Future Time Clause का महत्वपूर्ण Rule
जब future meaning वाले time clause में when, before, after, until, as soon as आदि आते हैं, तो subordinate clause में सामान्यतः Present Simple का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
❌ When he will come, I will meet him.
✅ When he comes, I will meet him.
इसी तरह:
❌ I will call you when I will reach home.
✅ I will call you when I reach home.
21. Place Clause
Place Clause बताता है कि action कहाँ हुआ या होना है।
Common words:
- where
- wherever
Examples:
Stay where you are.
Wherever he goes, people welcome him.
We can sit wherever you like.
22. Reason/Cause Clause
Reason Clause बताता है कि कोई action क्यों हुआ।
Common conjunctions:
- because
- since
- as
- now that
Examples:
I stayed home because I was sick.
Since it was raining, we stayed indoors.
As he was tired, he went to bed.
Because और Because of
Because + Clause
Because he was ill.
Because of + Noun/Noun Phrase
Because of his illness.
| Because | Because of |
|---|---|
| Because he was ill | Because of his illness |
| Because it rained | Because of the rain |
| Because she was late | Because of her lateness |
23. Condition Clause
Condition Clause बताता है कि कोई action किस condition पर होगा।
Common expressions:
- if
- unless
- provided that
- provided
- as long as
- in case
- on condition that
Examples:
If you work hard, you will succeed.
Unless you study, you will not pass.
You can go provided that you finish your work.
Unless
Unless = If not
Unless you study, you will not pass.
का अर्थ है:
If you do not study, you will not pass.
इसलिए सामान्य condition में:
❌ Unless you do not study, you will fail.
से बचना चाहिए।
24. Purpose Clause
Purpose Clause बताता है कि कोई action किस उद्देश्य से किया गया।
Common expressions:
- so that
- in order that
- lest
Examples:
He works hard so that he can succeed.
She saved money so that she could buy a laptop.
He spoke softly so that nobody could hear him.
So That और So…That
so that → Purpose
He studied hard so that he could pass.
so…that → Result
He was so tired that he could not walk.
25. Result Clause
Result Clause किसी action या condition का परिणाम बताता है।
Common structures:
- so…that
- such…that
Examples:
He was so tired that he fell asleep.
It was such a difficult question that nobody could solve it.
Basic distinction:
so + adjective/adverb + that
such + noun phrase + that
Examples:
- so beautiful that
- so difficult that
- such a beautiful girl that
- such a difficult question that
26. Contrast/Concession Clause
यह clause contrast या विरोध व्यक्त करता है।
Common words:
- although
- though
- even though
- whereas
- while
Examples:
Although he was tired, he continued working.
Though it was raining, they went outside.
Even though she was ill, she attended the class.
Although और But
सामान्य construction में although और but को एक ही clause structure में साथ नहीं लगाते।
❌ Although he was poor, but he was honest.
✅ Although he was poor, he was honest.
या:
✅ He was poor, but he was honest.
27. Comparison Clause
Comparison के लिए निम्न structures महत्वपूर्ण हैं:
- as…as
- than
- as if
- as though
Examples:
He runs faster than I do.
She is as intelligent as her brother is.
He behaves as if he knew everything.
She behaves as though she were the boss.
As If / As Though
इनका प्रयोग appearance या hypothetical/unreal comparison के लिए किया जा सकता है।
He talks as if he knew everything.
इसका अर्थ यह जरूरी नहीं है कि वह वास्तव में सब कुछ जानता है।
28. Clause Identification का Master Method
किसी भी difficult sentence में clause identify करने के लिए निम्न steps follow करें।
Step 1: Finite Verbs खोजें
Example:
When the teacher entered the class, the students became silent.
Verbs:
- entered
- became
Step 2: प्रत्येक Verb का Subject खोजें
- teacher + entered
- students + became
Step 3: Clauses अलग करें
- When the teacher entered the class
- the students became silent
Step 4: Independent Clause खोजें
The students became silent.
यह complete sentence है।
इसलिए यह Independent Clause है।
Step 5: दूसरे Clause का Function देखें
When the teacher entered the class
यह बताता है कि students कब silent हुए।
इसलिए:
→ Adverb Clause of Time
29. Noun, Adjective और Adverb Clause में अंतर
यह पूरे chapter का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण concept है।
| Clause | Function | पहचानने का प्रश्न |
|---|---|---|
| Noun Clause | Noun की तरह काम करता है | What? Who? |
| Adjective Clause | Noun/Pronoun को modify करता है | Which? What kind? Whose? |
| Adverb Clause | Action/circumstance के बारे में information देता है | When? Why? Where? How? Condition? |
Noun Clause
I know what he wants.
I know what?
→ what he wants
Adjective Clause
The boy who won the race is my friend.
Which boy?
→ who won the race
Adverb Clause
He left because he was tired.
Why did he leave?
→ because he was tired
Golden Rule:
Clause का type उसके starting word से नहीं, बल्कि sentence में उसके grammatical function से तय होता है।
30. एक ही Word के अलग-अलग Clause Functions
यह competitive examinations के लिए बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है।
एक ही word अलग-अलग sentences में अलग प्रकार के clauses introduce कर सकता है।
Where
I know where he lives.
→ Noun Clause
क्योंकि:
I know what?
→ where he lives
This is the house where he lives.
→ Adjective Clause
क्योंकि यह house को describe कर रहा है।
Stay where you are.
→ Adverb Clause
क्योंकि यह बताता है कि कहाँ stay करना है।
When
I know when he will come.
→ Noun Clause
I remember the day when he came.
→ Adjective Clause
When he came, we were eating.
→ Adverb Clause
Why
I know why she left.
→ Noun Clause
I know the reason why she left.
→ Adjective Clause
That
I know that he is honest.
→ Noun Clause
The book that I bought is expensive.
→ Adjective Clause
इसलिए केवल where, when, why, that जैसे words देखकर clause type identify करना गलत तरीका है।
31. Clause Nesting
कभी-कभी एक dependent clause के अंदर दूसरा dependent clause भी हो सकता है।
Example:
I know that the boy who won the race is my friend.
इस sentence में:
- I know → Main Clause
- that the boy who won the race is my friend → Noun Clause
- who won the race → Adjective Clause
यहाँ Adjective Clause, Noun Clause के अंदर embedded है।
ऐसे sentences को समझने के लिए पूरे sentence को एक साथ analyse करने के बजाय पहले छोटे clauses identify करें।
32. Finite और Non-Finite Clauses
Grammar में clauses को Finite और Non-Finite forms के आधार पर भी समझा जा सकता है।
Finite Clause
Finite verb tense या subject agreement जैसी grammatical information दिखाता है।
Example:
When he arrived
यहाँ arrived finite verb है।
Non-Finite Clause
Non-finite clause में infinitive, participle या -ing form जैसी structures हो सकती हैं।
Example:
To win the match is difficult.
यहाँ:
To win the match
एक infinitival clause है और पूरे sentence में Subject की तरह काम कर रहा है।
यह concept advanced grammar और higher classes के लिए अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है।
33. Clause और Sentence Structure
Clauses की संख्या और उनके relationship के आधार पर sentence structures को समझा जा सकता है।
Simple Sentence
एक Independent Clause:
Ravi works hard.
Compound Sentence
दो या अधिक Independent Clauses:
Ravi works hard, and he succeeds.
Complex Sentence
एक Independent Clause + कम से कम एक Dependent Clause:
Ravi succeeds because he works hard.
Compound-Complex Sentence
कम से कम दो Independent Clauses + कम से कम एक Dependent Clause:
Ravi works hard because he wants to succeed, and his brother helps him.
| Sentence Type | Basic Structure |
|---|---|
| Simple | 1 Independent Clause |
| Compound | 2+ Independent Clauses |
| Complex | 1 Independent + 1+ Dependent Clause |
| Compound-Complex | 2+ Independent + 1+ Dependent Clauses |
34. Clause और Conjunction का संबंध
Conjunctions clauses को जोड़ने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।
Coordinating Conjunction
दो independent clauses को जोड़ सकता है।
He worked hard, and he succeeded.
Subordinating Conjunction
Dependent Clause introduce करता है।
He succeeded because he worked hard.
Relative Pronoun
Adjective Clause introduce कर सकता है।
The boy who won the race is my friend.
इसलिए clause analysis करते समय conjunction और relative pronoun को पहचानना बहुत helpful होता है।
35. Punctuation और Clauses
जब dependent clause sentence की शुरुआत में आता है, तो comma का प्रयोग अक्सर किया जाता है।
When I reached home, my mother was cooking.
लेकिन dependent clause main clause के बाद आए तो सामान्य adverb clause में comma अक्सर आवश्यक नहीं होता।
My mother was cooking when I reached home.
Non-Defining Relative Clause
Non-defining relative clause को commas से अलग किया जाता है।
Rohan, who is my best friend, lives nearby.
Comma यहाँ यह signal देता है कि relative clause अतिरिक्त information दे रहा है।
36. Sentence Transformation में Clauses
Clauses की knowledge sentence transformation में बहुत उपयोगी है।
Simple → Complex
Being ill, he did not attend school.
→ Because he was ill, he did not attend school.
Complex → Simple
Because he was ill, he did not attend school.
→ Being ill, he did not attend school.
Compound → Complex
He was ill, so he did not attend school.
→ As he was ill, he did not attend school.
यह transformation करते समय meaning को यथासंभव समान रखना जरूरी है।
37. Common Errors in Clauses
Because + Therefore
❌ Because he was ill, therefore he did not come.
✅ Because he was ill, he did not come.
या:
✅ He was ill; therefore, he did not come.
Although + But
❌ Although he is poor, but he is honest.
✅ Although he is poor, he is honest.
या:
✅ He is poor, but he is honest.
Unless + Negative
❌ Unless you do not work hard, you will fail.
सामान्य intended meaning के लिए:
✅ Unless you work hard, you will fail.
Future after When
❌ When he will come, I will meet him.
✅ When he comes, I will meet him.
Incorrect Indirect Question
❌ I don’t know where does he live.
✅ I don’t know where he lives.
Incorrect Relative Pronoun
❌ The boy which won the race is my friend.
व्यक्ति के लिए:
✅ The boy who won the race is my friend.
