Pronoun: Definition and Types, Examples, Practice Questions

Pronoun क्या है? – What is a Pronoun?

English Grammar में Pronoun एक ऐसा word है जिसका प्रयोग किसी Noun के स्थान पर किया जाता है। Pronoun का मुख्य उद्देश्य sentence में एक ही noun को बार-बार दोहराने से बचाना और language को natural तथा आसान बनाना है।

उदाहरण देखें:

Ravi is a student. Ravi goes to school every day. Ravi likes English.

यहाँ “Ravi” बार-बार repeat हो रहा है। इसे pronoun की मदद से बेहतर तरीके से लिखा जा सकता है:

Ravi is a student. He goes to school every day. He likes English.

यहाँ He शब्द Ravi के स्थान पर आया है। इसलिए He is a Pronoun.

एक और उदाहरण:

The book is on the table. The book is very interesting.

बेहतर sentence:

The book is on the table. It is very interesting.

यहाँ It, “the book” के स्थान पर आया है।

इस प्रकार, Pronouns English sentences को short, clear, natural और less repetitive बनाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।

Pronoun की आसान परिभाषा

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.

हिंदी में:

Noun के स्थान पर प्रयोग होने वाले शब्द को Pronoun कहते हैं।

Examples

  • Ram is my friend. He is very helpful.
  • Sita is a teacher. She teaches English.
  • The dog is hungry. It needs food.
  • Ravi and Mohan are brothers. They live together.
  • This is my book. It is new.

इन सभी sentences में He, She, It और They nouns के स्थान पर इस्तेमाल हुए हैं।

Pronoun की आवश्यकता क्यों पड़ती है?

अगर Pronouns का प्रयोग न किया जाए, तो English sentences unnecessarily repetitive हो जाएंगे।

Without Pronouns

Rahul went to the market. Rahul bought some fruits. Rahul returned home. Rahul gave the fruits to Rahul’s mother.

With Pronouns

Rahul went to the market. He bought some fruits. He returned home. He gave the fruits to his mother.

दूसरा paragraph अधिक natural और readable है।

इसलिए Pronouns का प्रयोग:

  • Repetition कम करता है
  • Sentences को छोटा बनाता है
  • Communication को natural बनाता है
  • Writing को smooth बनाता है
  • Speaking को आसान बनाता है
  • Reading comprehension में मदद करता है
  • Grammar questions हल करने में मदद करता है

Pronouns के मुख्य प्रकार

English Grammar में Pronouns के कई प्रकार होते हैं। अलग-अलग grammar books में classification थोड़ा अलग मिल सकता है, लेकिन learners और exam preparation के लिए निम्न प्रमुख types सबसे उपयोगी हैं:

अब इन्हें एक-एक करके समझते हैं।

Personal Pronouns

Personal Pronouns का प्रयोग किसी व्यक्ति, animal या thing के नाम के स्थान पर किया जाता है।

मुख्य Personal Pronouns हैं:

I, we, you, he, she, it, they

इनके object forms हैं:

me, us, you, him, her, it, them

Subject और Object Personal Pronouns

PersonSubjectObject

First Person, Second Person और Third Person

Pronouns को person के आधार पर भी समझा जाता है।

First Person

जब speaker स्वयं की बात करता है।

I, me, we, us

Examples:

  • I am ready.
  • We are students.
  • The teacher asked me a question.
  • She invited us.

Subject Pronouns

जो pronouns sentence में subject का काम करते हैं, उन्हें Subject Pronouns कहते हैं।

I, we, you, he, she, it, they

Examples:

  • I like English.
  • We live in India.
  • You are correct.
  • He works hard.
  • She sings well.
  • It is raining.
  • They play football.

यहाँ प्रत्येक pronoun action करने वाले subject के रूप में है।

Object Pronouns

जो pronouns verb या preposition के object के रूप में प्रयोग होते हैं, उन्हें Object Pronouns कहते हैं।

me, us, you, him, her, it, them

Examples:

  • She called me.
  • He helped us.
  • I saw him.
  • We invited her.
  • I bought it.
  • The teacher praised them.

एक आसान तरीका

यदि pronoun के बाद action हो रहा है, तो वह अक्सर subject होगा।

He called me.

यदि action pronoun पर हो रहा है, तो वह object होगा।

She called him.

Possessive Pronouns

Possessive Pronouns किसी चीज पर अधिकार या ownership बताते हैं।

मुख्य Possessive Pronouns:

mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs

Examples:

  • This book is mine.
  • That pen is yours.
  • The red car is his.
  • This bag is hers.
  • The house is ours.
  • These books are theirs.

Possessive Pronoun और Possessive Determiner में अंतर

यह exam में बहुत important है।

my, your, his, her, our, their के बाद सामान्यतः noun आता है।

  • This is my book.
  • That is your car.
  • This is her bag.

लेकिन Possessive Pronoun अकेले noun की जगह आता है।

  • This book is mine.
  • That car is yours.
  • This bag is hers.

तुलना

Possessive DeterminerPossessive Pronoun
my bookmine
your penyours
his carhis
her baghers
our houseours
their schooltheirs

Reflexive Pronouns

जब subject और object एक ही व्यक्ति या चीज को refer करते हैं, तो Reflexive Pronoun का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

मुख्य Reflexive Pronouns:

PersonReflexive Pronoun
Imyself
Youyourself
Hehimself
Sheherself
Ititself
Weourselves
Youyourselves
Theythemselves

Examples

  • I hurt myself.
  • You should believe in yourself.
  • He introduced himself.
  • She prepared herself.
  • The cat cleaned itself.
  • We enjoyed ourselves.
  • They blamed themselves.

Reflexive Pronoun का जोर देने के लिए प्रयोग

Reflexive Pronouns का प्रयोग emphasis के लिए भी किया जाता है।

Examples:

  • I myself completed the work.
  • The principal himself spoke to the students.
  • She herself prepared the food.
  • We ourselves saw the incident.

यहाँ reflexive pronoun का अर्थ “स्वयं” या “खुद” के sense में है।

Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative Pronouns किसी व्यक्ति, वस्तु या वस्तुओं की ओर संकेत करते हैं।

मुख्य Demonstrative Pronouns:

this, that, these, those

PronounUse
thisपास की एक वस्तु
thatदूर की एक वस्तु
theseपास की अनेक वस्तुएँ
thoseदूर की अनेक वस्तुएँ

Examples

  • This is my book.
  • That is your house.
  • These are my shoes.
  • Those are beautiful flowers.

This और These

This = singular

These = plural

  • This is a pen.
  • These are pens.

That और Those

That = singular

Those = plural

  • That is a tree.
  • Those are trees.

Demonstrative Pronoun और Determiner में अंतर

यह distinction भी महत्वपूर्ण है।

Pronoun

This is my book.

यहाँ “This” अकेले noun की जगह आया है।

Determiner

This book is mine.

यहाँ “This” के बाद noun book आया है।

इसी प्रकार:

  • Those are my shoes. → Pronoun
  • Those shoes are expensive. → Determiner

Interrogative Pronouns

जिन pronouns का प्रयोग questions पूछने के लिए किया जाता है, उन्हें Interrogative Pronouns कहते हैं।

मुख्य शब्द:

who, whom, whose, which, what

Who

व्यक्ति के बारे में पूछने के लिए।

  • Who is at the door?
  • Who called you?
  • Who is your teacher?

Whom

व्यक्ति के object के बारे में पूछने के लिए।

  • Whom did you meet?
  • Whom did the teacher call?

Modern everyday English में कई situations में “whom” की जगह “who” भी सुनने को मिलता है, लेकिन formal grammar और exams में subject/object distinction समझना उपयोगी है।

Whose

Possession के बारे में पूछने के लिए।

  • Whose book is this?
  • Whose pen is on the table?

Which

दिए गए options में से selection के लिए।

  • Which is your bag?
  • Which do you prefer?

What

किसी चीज या information के बारे में पूछने के लिए।

  • What is your name?
  • What happened?
  • What do you want?

Relative Pronouns

Relative Pronouns दो clauses को जोड़ने और पहले बताए गए noun के बारे में additional information देने में मदद करते हैं।

मुख्य Relative Pronouns:

who, whom, whose, which, that

Who

व्यक्तियों के लिए।

The boy who won the race is my friend.

यहाँ who “the boy” को refer करता है।

Whom

व्यक्ति के object के लिए।

The man whom I met was very polite.

Whose

Possession बताने के लिए।

The student whose book was lost is absent today.

Which

Animals और things के लिए।

This is the book which I bought yesterday.

That

People और things दोनों के लिए कई contexts में प्रयोग हो सकता है।

The book that I bought is interesting.

The student that won the competition received a prize.

Formal writing में people के लिए “who” अक्सर preferred होता है।

Relative Pronoun और Interrogative Pronoun में अंतर

एक ही word अलग situations में अलग grammatical role निभा सकता है।

Interrogative

Who is that man?

यहाँ “Who” question पूछ रहा है।

Relative

The man who lives next door is a doctor.

यहाँ “who” दो parts को जोड़ रहा है और “the man” को refer कर रहा है।

इसलिए केवल word देखकर type तय नहीं करना चाहिए। Sentence में उसका function देखना जरूरी है।

Indefinite Pronouns

जब किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु के बारे में exact information न हो या general sense में बात की जाए, तो Indefinite Pronouns का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Examples:

someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, no one, nobody, something, anything, everything, nothing

Examples

  • Someone is calling you.
  • Everybody enjoyed the program.
  • Nobody knows the answer.
  • Anyone can learn English.
  • Something is wrong.
  • Nothing is impossible with practice.

Important Indefinite Pronouns

PronounMeaning
someoneकोई व्यक्ति
somebodyकोई व्यक्ति
anyoneकोई भी व्यक्ति
anybodyकोई भी व्यक्ति
everyoneहर व्यक्ति
everybodyहर व्यक्ति
nobodyकोई भी नहीं
no oneकोई भी नहीं
somethingकोई चीज
anythingकोई भी चीज
everythingहर चीज
nothingकुछ भी नहीं

Distributive Pronouns

जब व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं को एक-एक करके consider किया जाता है, तो Distributive Pronouns का प्रयोग होता है।

मुख्य words:

each, either, neither

Each

दो या दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों/वस्तुओं में से हर एक।

  • Each of the students received a book.
  • Each has a different opinion.

Either

दो में से कोई एक।

  • Either of the two answers is correct.
  • You can take either.

Neither

दो में से कोई भी नहीं।

  • Neither of the answers is correct.
  • Neither was ready.

Reciprocal Pronouns

जब दो या दो से अधिक लोग एक-दूसरे के प्रति समान action या relationship दिखाते हैं, तो Reciprocal Pronouns का प्रयोग होता है।

मुख्य Reciprocal Pronouns:

each other
one another

Examples:

  • The two friends helped each other.
  • The brothers respect each other.
  • The team members supported one another.

Traditional grammar में “each other” को अक्सर two persons और “one another” को more than two persons के लिए बताया जाता है। Modern English में यह distinction बहुत strict नहीं है।

Intensive Pronouns

Reflexive forms जब केवल emphasis के लिए प्रयोग होते हैं, तो उन्हें Intensive Pronouns कहा जा सकता है।

Examples:

  • I myself checked the answer.
  • She herself called me.
  • The manager himself approved the plan.

ध्यान दें कि form वही है जो Reflexive Pronoun का है; difference sentence में function का है।

Pronoun के Number – Singular और Plural

Pronouns भी Singular और Plural हो सकते हैं।

Singular

  • I
  • me
  • he
  • him
  • she
  • her
  • it
  • this
  • that

Plural

  • we
  • us
  • they
  • them
  • these
  • those

Examples

This is a book.

These are books.

He is my friend.

They are my friends.

Pronoun के Gender

Third-person singular pronouns में gender distinction दिखाई देता है।

Masculine

he, him, his, himself

Example:

Rohan is a student. He is hardworking.

Feminine

she, her, hers, herself

Example:

Priya is a teacher. She is kind.

Neuter

it, its, itself

Generally things, ideas, situations या animals जब gender relevant/known नहीं है।

Example:

The machine is old. It needs repair.

Gender-Neutral / Common Reference

they, them, their, theirs, themselves का singular use भी modern English में common है, खासकर जब व्यक्ति का gender unknown या unspecified हो।

Example:

Someone left their bag here.

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

Pronoun जिस noun को refer करता है, उसे उसका antecedent कहा जाता है।

Pronoun और antecedent के बीच number और person का उचित agreement होना चाहिए।

Correct

Ravi is a student. He is intelligent.

यहाँ:

Ravi → He

दोनों singular और third person हैं।

Incorrect

Ravi is a student. They is intelligent.

Correct

The students are ready. They are waiting.

Students → They

दोनों plural हैं।

Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement के Important Rules

Singular noun के साथ singular pronoun

The boy forgot his bag.

Plural noun के साथ plural pronoun

The boys forgot their bags.

Two nouns joined by “and” सामान्यतः plural pronoun लेते हैं

Ravi and Mohan completed their work.

“Each” के साथ traditional exam grammar में singular agreement

Each student must bring his or her book.

Modern English में singular “they” भी widely used है:

Each student must bring their book.

Exam में अपने prescribed grammar rules और question context को follow करना बेहतर है।

Pronoun Case – Subject, Object और Possessive

Pronouns का form उनके grammatical role के अनुसार बदल सकता है।

SubjectObjectPossessive
Imemine
weusours
youyouyours
hehimhis
sheherhers
itit
theythemtheirs

Examples:

I like English.

The teacher helped me.

This book is mine.

She called him.

The bag is hers.

“I” और “Me” में अंतर

यह एक बहुत common error है।

I = Subject

Ravi and I went to school.

यहाँ “I” action कर रहा है।

Me = Object

The teacher called Ravi and me.

यहाँ action “me” पर हो रहा है।

आसान Trick

Sentence को temporarily दूसरे person को हटाकर पढ़ें।

Ravi and I went to school.

I went to school.

The teacher called Ravi and me.

The teacher called me.

“He” और “Him” में अंतर

He subject के रूप में:

  • He is my brother.
  • He helped me.

Him object के रूप में:

  • I helped him.
  • She called him.

“She” और “Her” में अंतर

She subject:

  • She is a doctor.
  • She teaches English.

Her object:

  • I met her.
  • We invited her.

“Her” possessive determiner भी हो सकता है:

  • Her book is new.

“They” और “Them” में अंतर

They = subject

  • They are students.
  • They helped us.

Them = object

  • We helped them.
  • I called them.

“Its” और “It’s” में अंतर

यह English में सबसे common confusion में से एक है।

Its

Possession बताता है।

The dog wagged its tail.

It’s

It is या It has का contraction है।

It’s cold today.
= It is cold today.

It’s been a long day.
= It has been a long day.

याद रखें:

its = possession

it’s = it is / it has

“Your” और “You’re” में अंतर

Your

Possession:

Is this your book?

You’re

You are का short form:

You’re very kind.

= You are very kind.

“Their”, “There” और “They’re”

तीनों अलग हैं।

Their

Possession:

Their house is beautiful.

There

Place या existence:

The book is there.

There is a problem.

They’re

They are का contraction:

They’re ready.

= They are ready.

Pronoun के बाद Noun कब आता है?

हर pronoun के बाद noun नहीं आता।

Examples:

This is my book.

यहाँ “This” अकेला pronoun है।

लेकिन:

This book is mine.

यहाँ “This” noun “book” को determine कर रहा है।

इसी तरह:

Those are expensive.

vs.

Those shoes are expensive.

Sentence में word का actual function देखकर पहचान करना चाहिए।

Pronouns और Articles का संबंध

Pronouns अक्सर noun phrase को replace कर देते हैं, इसलिए जहाँ pronoun अकेले noun की जगह आ रहा हो, वहाँ article की जरूरत नहीं होती।

Compare:

The boy is here.

He is here.

यहाँ “He” ने “the boy” को replace किया।

गलत:

The he is here.

सही:

He is here.

Pronouns के साथ Prepositions

Object pronouns prepositions के बाद बहुत commonly आते हैं।

Examples:

  • This gift is for you.
  • Come with me.
  • She spoke to him.
  • They are waiting for us.
  • I went with them.

Preposition के बाद सामान्यतः object form आता है।

Pronoun और Noun में अंतर

NounPronoun
किसी व्यक्ति/स्थान/वस्तु का नाम बताता हैNoun की जगह आता है
Rahulhe
Priyashe
bookit
studentsthey
teachersthey

Example:

Rahul is intelligent. Rahul studies every day.

बेहतर:

Rahul is intelligent. He studies every day.

Pronoun और Adjective में अंतर

कुछ words context के अनुसार अलग grammatical functions कर सकते हैं।

Example:

This is my pen.

यहाँ This pronoun है।

This pen is mine.

यहाँ This noun “pen” को modify/determine कर रहा है।

इसीलिए केवल word याद करना पर्याप्त नहीं है। Sentence में उसका काम समझना जरूरी है।

Pronoun और Determiner में अंतर

यह advanced learners के लिए useful distinction है।

My book is new.

यहाँ “my” noun “book” के साथ है और possession बताता है।

The book is mine.

यहाँ “mine” noun phrase के स्थान पर आता है।

इसी प्रकार:

This book is interesting.

लेकिन:

This is interesting.

पहले sentence में “this” determiner है; दूसरे में pronoun।

Common Errors in Pronouns

English sentence में unnecessary double subject नहीं होना चाहिए।

❌ My brother he is a doctor.

✔ My brother is a doctor.

या

✔ He is a doctor.

❌ The students they are ready.

✔ The students are ready.

या

✔ They are ready.

Ambiguous Pronoun क्या होता है?

कभी-कभी sentence में pronoun का antecedent clear नहीं होता। इससे meaning confusing हो सकता है।

Example:

Ravi told Mohan that he was late.

यहाँ “he” Ravi है या Mohan? Sentence clear नहीं है।

Better:

Ravi told Mohan, “You are late.”

या

Ravi told Mohan that Ravi was late.

Clear writing में pronoun का reference आसानी से समझ आना चाहिए।

Pronouns in Imperative Sentences

Imperative sentences में subject “you” अक्सर understood होता है।

लेकिन सामान्य imperative sentence में “you” लिखना जरूरी नहीं होता।

Examples:

  • Come here.
  • Listen to me.

Pronouns और Preposition – Important Exam Point

Example:

Pronouns सीखने का सबसे आसान तरीका

Pronouns को केवल list याद करके सीखने की बजाय उन्हें sentences में use करना ज्यादा effective है।

उदाहरण के लिए केवल यह याद न करें:

I – me – my – mine – myself

बल्कि पाँच छोटे sentences बनाइए:

  • I am a student.
  • The teacher called me.
  • My book is new.
  • This book is mine.
  • I completed the work myself.

इसी तरह:

He – him – his – himself

  • He is my brother.
  • I called him.
  • His bag is blue.
  • He did it himself.

Pronouns को Speaking में कैसे Practice करें?

अपने daily life के बारे में 5–10 sentences बोलिए और जानबूझकर Pronouns का प्रयोग कीजिए।

Example:

I wake up early. I get ready for school. My brother goes with me. We reach school on time. Our teacher welcomes us. She teaches us English. We listen to her carefully.

इस छोटे paragraph में कई Pronouns naturally इस्तेमाल हो गए:

I, me, we, our, us, she, her

यही practical learning English Grammar को real communication से जोड़ती है।

Final Takeaway

Pronouns English Grammar का छोटा topic दिखाई देता है, लेकिन practically यह लगभग हर English sentence का हिस्सा बन जाते हैं। अगर कोई learner I और me, he और him, she और her, they और them, your और you’re, their और they’re, its और it’s जैसे basic differences अच्छी तरह समझ लेता है, तो उसकी sentence formation काफी बेहतर हो सकती है।
