What is Tense? (Definition + Meaning)
- Tense is a grammatical concept that shows the time of an action, event, or state.
- It tells when something happens: Past, Present, or Future.
- Tense helps us make correct, meaningful sentences in English.
Etymology (Word Origin of “Tense”)
- The word “Tense” comes from the Latin word “Tempus”, meaning time.
- This shows that the entire idea of tense is connected to expressing time in grammar.
Definition of Tense
According to different famous dictionaries, the word “tense” has a simple meaning:
- The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary says that tense is the form of a verb that shows the time of an action or state.
- The Merriam-Webster Dictionary explains that tense is a change in the verb form that tells us the time or duration of an action.
- The Collins Dictionary says that the tense of a verb shows whether we are talking about the past, present, or future.
- The Cambridge Dictionary defines tense as the form of a verb that shows when an action happened.
In simple words: Tense tells us the time of an action — past, present, or future — through the form of the verb.

Types of Tense
English grammar has three main tenses:
- Present Tense

Each tense has four sub-types, making a total of 12 tenses.
Present Tense

2. Present Continuous Tense

Past Tense

Used for showing actions that will continue up to a point in the future.
