English Grammar में Vowels and Consonants बहुत basic लेकिन अत्यंत important topic है। यह topic school exams से लेकर competitive examinations जैसे SSC, Railway, Banking, NDA, UPSC, CAT, Olympiads आदि में अलग-अलग प्रकार के questions के रूप में पूछा जा सकता है।

इस chapter में हम Vowels (स्वर) और Consonants (व्यंजन) को आसान भाषा में समझेंगे और साथ ही यह भी देखेंगे कि विभिन्न परीक्षाओं में इस topic से किस प्रकार के questions पूछे जाते हैं।

Vowels क्या होते हैं?

English alphabet में मुख्य रूप से 5 Vowels होते हैं:

A, E, I, O, U

इन letters को Vowels कहा जाता है।

U – Umbrella

इन पाँच letters के अलावा Y कुछ शब्दों में vowel sound दे सकता है, लेकिन सामान्य English alphabet classification में Y को मुख्य vowel नहीं माना जाता।

Vowels की मुख्य विशेषता

Vowel sound बोलते समय हवा को mouth से निकलने में consonants की तरह कोई major blockage नहीं होता।

Vowels के Types

School-level English में vowels को मुख्य रूप से दो तरह से समझाया जाता है:

Short Vowels
Long Vowels

इसके अलावा phonetics में vowels को sound के आधार पर और भी विस्तार से classify किया जाता है।

Short Vowels

जब vowel अपनी सामान्य short sound देता है, उसे short vowel sound कहते हैं।

Long Vowels

जब vowel अपने letter name जैसी sound देता है, तो उसे सामान्यतः long vowel sound कहा जाता है।

ध्यान रखें कि English pronunciation में vowel sounds केवल पाँच नहीं होते। एक ही vowel letter अलग-अलग words में अलग sound दे सकता है।

Vowel Letters और Vowel Sounds में अंतर

यह distinction competitive exams में बहुत important हो सकता है।

Vowel letter एक written alphabet character है, जैसे A, E, I, O, U।

लेकिन vowel sound pronunciation से संबंधित है।

इसलिए किसी word में vowel letter और vowel sound की संख्या हमेशा समान नहीं होती।

इसलिए exam में यदि पूछा जाए कि किसी word में vowel कितने हैं, तो letters गिनें; यदि पूछा जाए कि vowel sounds कितनी हैं, तो pronunciation पर ध्यान दें।

Consonants के Types

Consonants को अलग-अलग linguistic आधारों पर classify किया जा सकता है।

School exams में सामान्यतः students से consonants की पहचान पूछी जाती है, जबकि higher-level English या competitive exams में consonant sounds और pronunciation से जुड़े questions भी मिल सकते हैं।

Voiced Consonants

जब consonant sound बोलते समय vocal cords vibrate करते हैं, तो उसे voiced consonant sound कहते हैं।

Vowels से पहले A या An?

Vowels और consonants का सबसे common application A और An के use में दिखाई देता है।

लेकिन यहाँ एक बहुत important rule है:

A और An का selection letter के आधार पर नहीं, sound के आधार पर होता है।

यदि अगला sound vowel sound है, तो सामान्यतः an का प्रयोग होता है।

Honest में h लिखा है, लेकिन h pronounce नहीं होता। इसलिए honest vowel sound से शुरू होता है।

दूसरी ओर consonant letter से शुरू होने के बावजूद consonant sound होने पर a लगाया जाता है।

यदि किसी word में total letters और vowels की संख्या दी गई हो, तो consonants निकाले जा सकते हैं।
