Conjunctions – Definition, Types, Examples, and Notes
✍️ Welcome Learners! In English grammar, small words often play a big role in making our sentences clear and meaningful. One such important group of words is Conjunctions. These are the joining words that connect thoughts, ideas, and sentences together. In this lesson, we will explore the definition, importance, types, rules, and examples of Conjunctions to help you strengthen your grammar and communication skills.
1. What are Conjunctions?
The word Conjunction comes from Latin:
Con = together
Junct = join
A Conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases, or sentences.
Without conjunctions, our language would sound broken and disconnected.
Examples:
I like tea and coffee.
He is poor but honest.
You can come now, or you can come later.

The common ones are: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS).
Examples:

Show relationship like time, cause, condition, contrast, etc.
Examples:
I will call you when I reach home. (time)
She is happy because she won the prize. (cause)
I cannot go out if it rains. (condition)
He is richer than his brother. (comparison)

Pairs of conjunctions used together.
Examples: Either…or, Neither…nor, Both…and, Not only…but also, Whether…or.
