Chapter 6: Tissue

🔹 1. Introduction

  • Tissue: A group of similar cells performing a specific function.
  • Types of organisms:

    • Multicellular: Different cells perform different functions (division of labour).

🔹 2. Plant Tissues

🔸 (A) Meristematic Tissue – Dividing cells

  • Characteristics: Active cell division, small cells, dense cytoplasm, no vacuoles, prominent nuclei.
  • Types:
    1. Apical meristem – Found at root/shoot tips (increases length).
    2. Intercalary meristem – At internodes/base of leaves (growth between tissues).
    3. Lateral meristem (cambium) – Increases thickness (girth) of stems/roots.

🔸 (B) Permanent Tissue – Non-dividing cells

(Develops from meristematic tissue)

    • Provides flexibility and mechanical support.
  • Sclerenchyma:
    • Dead cells, thick walls (lignin), no internal space.
    • Function: Mechanical support.
(ii) Complex Permanent Tissue
  • Made of different types of cells.
